There is no single national test. Each ambulance service sets its own process and it can change between campaigns. Across the services we checked, the stages candidates meet most often are:
- a C1 driving licence requirement (some services accept a provisional C1 at application)
- Highway Code, road-sign and map-reading questions at some services
- a driving assessment in a larger vehicle
- a fitness or manual-handling assessment
- a values-based interview, and at some services a situational judgement test or group exercise

Questions
Which ambulance roles is this for?
Road-crew and patient transport roles: Emergency Care Assistant (ECA), Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA) and patient transport, Associate or Assistant Ambulance Practitioner (AAP), and EMT or apprentice roles. If you are applying for a 999 call handler or NHS 111 role, the 999 Call Handler Tests are the right product instead.
Is there one national ambulance recruitment test?
No. Each ambulance service runs its own process, and it changes between campaigns. Depending on the service, candidates have met Highway Code and road-sign questions, map reading, a situational judgement test, a driving assessment, a fitness or manual-handling assessment and a values-based interview. Always check your advert and candidate pack; our service-by-service guide links to the sources we used.
Does this teach me to drive or get my C1 licence?
No. We explain what the driving assessment and the C1 licence involve, and the Highway Code quiz helps with the knowledge side, but driving must be learned with a qualified instructor and the C1 licence comes from the DVLA and DVSA.
Are the questions taken from a real service's test?
No. Every question is our own original practice material, written from the official Highway Code and published recruitment information. 999ready is independent and is not affiliated with the NHS or any ambulance service.
Is it a subscription?
No. It is a single one-time payment, with unlimited attempts and no expiry. If you already own the Values-Based Interview Coach, Crew Prep is £8.
