Comprehension & Recall

Read control-room documents and answer questions, or hear a call once and answer from memory — two skills that several ambulance services list in their call handler and NHS 111 assessments.

How it works

  • → Each passage is a workplace document: service information, staff guidance, a notice or a handover note.
  • → The passage stays on screen. Answer using only what it says — not what you think is usually true.
  • → Questions ask for the main point, a detail, what can be inferred, and what the passage does NOT say.
  • → One timer covers the whole test. You can move back and forth and change answers until you finish.

There is no single national format. London Ambulance Service lists a typing test, a comprehension multiple-choice quiz and a recall multiple-choice quiz for NHS 111 health advisors, and a 45-minute assessment of situational judgement, comprehension, recall and typing for 999 call handlers; other services use their own tests. This is original practice in that style, not any service's actual test. Keyboard: Tab to move, Enter to choose, or press A–D.

About the Comprehension & Recall test

Several ambulance services list comprehension and recall among their call handler and NHS 111 health advisor assessments — for example, London Ambulance Service describes comprehension and recall multiple-choice quizzes for 111 health advisors. This practice gives you an original control-room document to read and answer questions on, or a short emergency call to hear once and answer from memory.

Reading comprehension checks that you can pick out the main point, find a detail, draw a sensible inference and spot what a document does not say. Listening recall checks that you can hold on to names, addresses, numbers and hazards after hearing them once — exactly what a call handler must do before the details are on screen. The free demo includes one passage and one call.
