NHS Bands 1–4 Interview Questions
What panels expect at Bands 1–4: Entry level. Examples may come from everyday life as well as work. The panel wants to see basic awareness and that the candidate can/has maintained the right behaviour as part of their own experience.
Example questions below are pitched at this level, across the values-based competencies NHS and HSC panels use. Answer them with real examples and, where you can, show the depth expected for Bands 1–4.
Care and Compassion
- What does showing care and compassion mean to you day to day?
- Describe a time you showed genuine compassion to someone, at home or at work.
Technical / Role Specific Skills
- What knowledge and skills do you have that are relevant to this post?
- How do you keep your knowledge and skills current? Give an example.
Communication
- How do you know when family, patients, relatives or colleagues have actually understood you?
- Talk me through a time you dealt with someone who was angry or confrontational.
Personal and People Development
- Tell me about the most recent thing you learned.
- How have you kept your skills up to date lately?
Health, Safety and Security
- How do you take personal responsibility for your own health, safety and security?
- Describe a time you spotted a health, safety or security risk.
Service Improvement
- Give an example of a time you found a better way of doing something.
- Describe a time you saw a patient or relative receive poor service.
Quality
- How do you make sure your own work is of the standard required?
- Give an example of how you check the accuracy of your work.
Equality and Diversity
- What do equality and diversity mean to you?
- Give an example of a time you supported someone's equality or diversity needs.
